A nut is a type of fastener with a threaded hole. Nuts are almost always used in conjunction with a mating bolt to fasten two or more parts together. The two partners are kept together by a combination of their threads' friction, a slight stretching of the bolt, and compression of the parts to be held together.
When there is a risk of nuts coming loose due to vibration or rotation, various locking mechanisms can be employed to secure them. These mechanisms include lock washers, jam nuts, specialized adhesive thread-locking compounds like Loctite, safety pins (split pins), or lockwire used in conjunction with castellated nuts, nylon inserts (Nyloc nuts), or nuts with slightly oval-shaped threads.
The most common nut shape is hexagonal, primarily for reasons similar to bolt heads. Its six sides provide a convenient array of angles for easy tool access, especially in tight spaces. It only takes a 1/6th rotation to access the next side of the hexagon, ensuring an optimal grip. However, polygons with more than six sides may not provide the necessary grip, and those with fewer sides may require more rotations to fully secure. Specialized nut shapes, such as wingnuts for finger adjustment and captive nuts like cage nuts designed for hard-to-reach areas, cater to specific needs.
Nuts come in a wide variety, ranging from standard household hardware versions to specialized designs tailored for specific industries and engineered to meet various technical standards. Fasteners used in automotive, engineering, and industrial applications often require precise torque settings achieved using a torque wrench. Nuts are graded based on strength ratings that correspond to their respective bolts. For instance, an ISO property class 10 nut can support the proof strength load of an ISO property class 10.9 bolt without stripping, while an SAE class 5 nut can withstand the proof load of an SAE class 5 bolt, and so on.
