Classification of copper materials


Generally speaking, according to the composition, it can be divided into pure copper, brass, nickel silver, and bronze.


Pure copper (red copper):

Pure copper is also called "red copper" because of its purple-red surface. The copper content of general industrial pure copper is 99.5%. Pure copper is an excellent conductive material second only to silver. It is soft and can be used for the manufacture of fasteners and sealing gaskets with high conductivity requirements.


Brass:

It is a copper-zinc alloy, which is ordinary brass. Other metal elements can be added to it to form a rich brass alloy system. For example, lead elements are added to it to form lead brass, and manganese elements are added to form manganese brass. Different materials are selected according to the occasion and processing requirements. As the copper content changes, the alloy properties also change. Commonly used brasses such as H62 and H65 indicate that their copper content is 62% and 65% respectively. The higher the content of zinc, the higher the strength of the material, but the plasticity decreases. Brass is cheaper than copper, and its conductivity and plasticity are slightly worse than copper, but its strength and hardness are higher. The fastener industry often uses brass as a fastener material, which can be used to manufacture copper bolts, copper studs, copper nuts, copper flat washers, copper spring washers, copper screw sleeves, etc. However, the zinc content in brass should be controlled within 45%, because a high zinc content will increase the brittleness of the material, resulting in poor plasticity of the product and affecting product performance.

Lead brass is also a commonly used brass material for manufacturing some machined and automatically turned parts. For example, C3604, HPb59-1, etc., because the addition of lead content can improve its cutting performance and meet its performance requirements. It can be often used to process copper hexagonal pillars, copper yin-yang screws, copper cap nuts, etc.


Cupronickel:

Cupronickel is a copper-nickel alloy with a silvery white color and a nickel content of 25%. Manganese, iron, zinc, aluminum and other elements can also be added to the binary alloy cupronickel to make complex cupronickel to achieve related complex characteristics.


Bronze:

Refers to copper alloys other than brass and cupronickel, and the name of the main added element is often prefixed to the name of bronze. Such as tin bronze, lead bronze, aluminum bronze, beryllium bronze, phosphor bronze, etc.

Silicon bronze and phosphor bronze are representatives of copper alloys with higher strength and elastic properties. The hardness can be greater than 192HV, and they are often used to make spring washers, conical washers and other parts.
