In situations where movement or vibration might cause a nut to loosen, different methods are used to secure it in place. These include various locking mechanisms like specialized adhesives such as Loctite, lock washers, jam nuts, safety pins, lockwire with castellated nuts, nylon inserts (like Nyloc nuts), or threads with a slightly oval shape.
Nuts commonly come in a hexagonal shape, similar to bolt heads. This shape provides practicality as the six sides allow for multiple angles to approach with a tool, especially useful in tight spaces. The design ensures that only a 1/6th rotation is needed to reach the next side of the hexagon, ensuring optimal grip. Shapes with more sides don't provide enough grip, while those with fewer sides take longer to rotate fully. Various specialized shapes like wingnuts for easy finger adjustments or captive nuts (such as cage nuts) for difficult-to-reach areas also exist.
There's a wide range of nut types available, catering to different needs, from basic household hardware to specialized industrial applications.
